Japanese encephalitis is caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). It is transmitted through mosquito bites after the insects feed on infected pigs and waterbirds. Its presence has been identified in humans, animals, and mosquitoes in mainland Australia. While often asymptomatic in humans, sporadically, it can lead to severe illness or even death.
